I am archiving this record as a Time Capsule. When the empire is fully established and I'm looking back on these foundational years from a much more comfortable vantage point, it'll be highly amusing to remember exactly what the terrain looked like when I was still a captain without a physical vessel, forced to navigate the asphalt archipelago of Peckham on foot.

Amusement isn't the only reason I'm logging it, though. Somewhere out there is someone who hasn't learned to read this terrain yet, a younger sibling, a reader, someone about to walk into a smoking area for the first time with no idea what they're actually looking at. It took me a decade on the concrete to build this map. Consider this me handing it over early.
The night that finally put this map into focus started with a civilized measure of brandy. Let's be clear: roaming the concrete at 2:30 in the morning instead of being in bed isn't a sober activity. I couldn't sleep, didn't feel like staring at YouTube, so I went out to watch real life instead. Already buzzing, coasting on my own frequency, I merged into a crew of known acquaintances outside a local establishment.
My intrigue about the crowd wasn't purely anthropological. While I was still calibrating my sea legs, I caught a woman holding heavy eye contact. I didn't act immediately, I coasted, assessed the terrain.

One of the chemically inflated deckhands in my crew intercepted the exact same signal.
Fuelled entirely by the powder, he loudly broadcast his intention to approach her, running his mouth like the lead protagonist.
This is the Synthetic Paradox: he had the volume, but his natural cowardice anchored him to the pavement. He never executed the maneuver, and here's the thing, he was never going to. The chemical writes a script his biology can't cash, and deep in his nervous system he knew that if he actually crossed the deck, the synthetic confidence would shatter the second it met real resistance.
But don't read the broadcasting as a failure to launch, because that's giving him too much credit. The approach was never the point. He announced it knowing he wouldn't do it, because the announcement itself was the whole transaction. This is a self-imposed humiliation ritual, and once you clock it you see it everywhere on the powder: a man so starved for the laugh, the reaction, the little hit of eyes-on-him, that he'll happily play the fool to get it. He doesn't mind being a joke. He can't tell the difference between being laughed with and laughed at, because both deliver the same dopamine, and dopamine is the only thing on the menu. He wasn't failing to get the girl. He was successfully scoring the reaction, and the currency he paid for it was his own dignity, spent cheap and spent gladly.
His obnoxious volume without the spine to back it up acted as a repellent, and it neutralized the situation for all three of us. A parasite doesn't just drain your energy, it pollutes your waters and torches your own operational success with its fear, then plays the wreckage for a laugh.
Log this deckhand carefully, by the way. He comes back before this record is done, and when he does, you'll understand why I know his wiring this well.
